Update from Gina Strati: Design and development of the custom tools

Gina Strati, Manager of AECL’s Mechanical Equipment Development Branch, outlines the design and development of the custom tools used both to inspect the condition of the reactor and apply the weld repairs to the NRU vessel. (March 25, 2010)

Ms Strati describes the extensive testing involved in ensuring the first-of-a-kind tools work successfully in a high radiation field and explains the complexity of designing tools to be used remotely by inserting them in the reactor through a 2.5 inch diameter access point.
