Randy Lesco and Cal Doucette: Engineering Strategies for Weld Repair

Randy Lesco, AECL’s General Manager Engineering & Projects, explains how his engineering team is ensuring that the weld repairs are done correctly with minimal impact on the NRU vessel and Cal Doucette, AECL Mechanical Design Engineer, takes you inside his office to outline the numerous competing priorities that must be addressed before finalizing the weld repair strategy. Once the strategy has been identified, the welding team must prove the strategy and qualify to conduct the weld on the NRU vessel. Mr. Lesco and Mr. Doucette explain that the last two repairs are the most challenging and therefore require more in-depth research, analysis and practise welds to ensure the repairs are done correctly, before NRU is safely returned to service.
